Snowmobile FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions)

The following is a list of “frequently asked questions” for your convenience. If you require further information, please contact us.

How can clutch components help my snowmobile?
The factories set up snowmobile to operate in a wide range of conditions and look for a good “all around” clutch set up. Back shifting, up shifting, towing different snow conditions are all factors. Many clutch tuners prefer to clutch for more “case specific” applications using various helixes, flyweights, springs, etc

Does Dalton offer complete “clutch kits” for snowmobiles?
No. Dalton Industries specializes in manufacturing clutch tuning components for: companies that assemble clutch kits, Performance shops, racers/tuners, that develop clutch set ups that work for their application.

How do I determine which clutch components for my snowmobile application?
Testing! There is a frequent saying in the snowmobile tuning world “The 10% of racers that do their OWN thorough testing…..Do 90% of the winning”.

Will Dalton tell me what clutch set up to use?
We completely understand that field testing and experimenting with various components is not for everyone.

On some new or current models we will do some testing, only to develop the proper range of components. We may be able to tell you what seems popular on some models, but ultimately the components that you get your Dealer to order for you from us must be your own, or your dealers decision.

If you are not the type that likes to do your own clutch tuning (and many are not for various reasons), the following is a list of companies that offer complete clutch kits and recommended set ups:

D&D Powersports (Lowville, NY) or Don’s Speed Parts (Wainwright, AB) – Arctic Cat
The Crankshop (Essex Jct. VT) – Skidoo)
Dynoport (Union Springs NY) – Polaris / Skidoo
Hot to Go Racing (Grand Island, NY) – Polaris
Hartman Inc. (Nampa, ID) – Yamaha
Fett Bros. Performance (Frazee, MN)
The Outdoor Shop (South Yarmouth, MA) – Arctic Cat
Northern Catalyst (Thunder Bay, ON) – Skidoo
Dakota Performance (Wishek ND) - Arctic Cat snowmobiles

  • Of course there are many more we can’t list all. If you are using performance add on’s (e.g. – pipes) it is always best to check first with the manufacturer of those products for corresponding clutch recommendations.

Is it possible to have a custom helix angle, that is not listed on the website?
Certainly, we regularly do custom requested angles. Just have your dealer place the order and it can usually be completed within 10 days. (Program charges do apply)

How are Dalton Pro Flyweights for Polaris different from the ones for Arctic Cat (regular style – not fixed pin)?
Weights for Polaris have a different pin / bushing size as well as the “tuck” or heel profile is different.

Why are the new “fixed pin” weights for Arctic different?
The ’04 and up Arctic drive clutches have a fixed pin design, where the set screw locks the weight to a pivoting pin.

Unlike some others, Dalton Pro weights for the Fixed pin design are wider than the ones for the old style clutch, just like the Factory Arctic Cat ones. This keeps our gram increments more in line with factory weights on these models.

Can retail customers purchase directly from Dalton Industries?
Effective May 1st, 2004 Dalton Industries sells only to dealers and distributors. Dalton products can be purchased through ANY Off Highway Motorsports dealers. If your dealer is not already in our files, please have him or her contact us.
